Cragg Farm is a traditional upland sheep and cattle farm in Eskdale, the Lake District.
We keep Herdwick sheep and native breed cattle (Hereford and Belted Galloways). The sheep are ‘hefted’ to the open fell beyond the farm, where we have ancient grazing rights. That means we can put the flock out to graze there and they won’t stray because they know where home is. This behaviour is passed down through the sheep, generation to generation.
About Cragg Farm
Our farming values are for excellent animal welfare in partnership with a healthy and thriving eco system. We are managing our stock numbers towards the level of self-sufficiency. This means that they can be fed on the pasture and forage on the farm and fell during the warmer months, and then in winter, with hay grown on the farm itself, benefitting both nature and livestock alike.
We plan to sell the meat from our animals and have already piloted a successful local meat box scheme which sold out to high acclaim. Producing high welfare, healthy and delicious meat is something we are passionate about.
